What currency does Aruba use? Should I bring cash or cards?

Updated May 21, 2026

The answer

The local currency is the Aruban Florin (AWG), roughly 1.79 to 1 USD. U.S. dollars are accepted nearly everywhere — restaurants, hotels, taxis, shops — and many places quote in both currencies. Major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted; American Express less so outside larger hotels. ATMs at the airport, malls, and main streets dispense both florins and USD. Bring some small USD bills for tips, casual food, and the occasional cash-only spot. You don't need to exchange currency in advance.

Don't bother exchanging dollars to florins — every place takes USD and the conversion rate from your card is fine.

Bring some small bills ($1s, $5s) for tips and roadside snacks where breaking a $20 is annoying.

Notify your bank before you go — some U.S. cards still flag Aruba transactions as suspicious.
